Going to a camp fair is extremely recommendable as it can be hugely beneficial in getting a job on the spot as a number of summer camp directors and staff from around the USA come to the UK and hire people in person. This is great as it gives you the chance to meet camp directors or their staff and allows you to dazzle them with your amazing personality! Each company has a camp fair, normally around January/February time, so check out your organisations website to see which ones are coming up and where. They normally take place in big cities such as London and Manchester.

Here are some things you should bear in mind:

Should I go to the camp counselor job fairs?

Yes, you silly billy! You can get hired on the spot! Then you can go home and spend hours telling all of your friends and family that you have got placed till their ears bleed. It's a great way to have your place secured. The hiring part is over and now you can c
oncentrate on looking forward to going.

What do I need to take to the fairs?

Duh!?. You :D (only joking). Most companies will ask you to bring your printed application form. I would advise bringing several copies, just incase one camp wants to hold onto a copy. Camp America also ask that you bring your references and any supporting certificates/photos/awards you have. Check out your organisations website to find out exactly what you need to bring.

Who will be at the job fair?

Firstly, you'll find staff of the organisation you are applying to work at camp through. They ensure the day runs smoothly and are on hand to answer any questions you may have. You’ll also find camp directors, and/or previous and current employees of the camps too. Some camps use the opportunity for a bit of a reunion, so expect plenty of whoops and squeals as friends come together again.

Can I apply for camp at the recruitment fair?

The simple answer is YES, but check with the company to find out exact details. Keep in mind that this does take a lot of time out of the day. It’s better to apply before, or get there early to give yourself the best chance to fit everything in.

What shall I wear to the recruitment fair?

Just wear whatever you normally would, smart casual is fine, just m
ake sure you look presentable. You want to make a good impression, but a full business suit isn't necessary.

What will the camp directors ask?

They will go through your application and ask you questions based on your experience. It definitely won’t be anything too difficult that you won’t be able to answer. You should prepare a few answers about why you want to work at camp and what you think you can bring to that camp. Think about what it is that makes you stand out. You should also prepare a couple of questions for the camp to show your interest. Make sure you are enthusiastic, hold eye contact and sell, sell, sell yourself!

How long do I need to be there for?

There is no time limit on how long you can spend at the job fair. It can depend on how organised you are.
If you arrive knowing which camps you want to talk to, your application form is filled in and correct, and you’re a decisive person, you could be in and out within an hour or so. Most people however will probably need longer than that. Keep in mind that the fairs do get extremely busy so its best to arrive as early as you can. Especially since the visiting camps will have specific roles they are looking to fill and will operate on a first come, first served basis. Don't rush, and don't leave simply because the queues are massive. Your patience may pay off!

Do I need to do anything before I go?

The organisation should provide you with a list of camps that are attending your job fair and what roles they will be looking to fill. Do some research. Visit their websites and try and remember something specific to each camp which you can bring up in conversation. It will show how keen you are when you meet them.

How do I get to the camp counselor job fairs?

Unfortunately, it’s up to you to find your own way to the camp fair. Make sure you book your train/bus/plane ticket early to get the best deal. Every penny will be worth it when you’re working in America, while everyone else is at home wishing they were with you!

What’s one tip you would give to people going to a camp fair?

Get there early! You want to be the screaming woman who has their face right up against the door. You will find that around 30 minutes before the event starts there will be a big queue, so take a tent with you and camp overnight (I was joking about the last bit).

Also, don't get disheartened if you don't get placed! There are hundreds of camps across America and only a small portion attend the job fair. Theres still plenty of time. Try and ask for feedback from camps that turn you down and use this to the best of your ability when talking to the next camp.
