What is a Summer Camp?

Summer camp is where great memories will be made, strong connections are formed, and fulfillment is found. Every summer season, camps bring together children and counselors from different backgrounds all around the world for the essential and rewarding purpose of working hard and having a lot of fun. At summer camp, everyone is made to feel welcome. Summer camps create a place where cultural and personal barriers fall and deep friendships can grow.

The great thing about summer camp is that kids are encouraged to be themselves and try new things, whilst counselors are there to be excellent role models (whilst also embracing their inner child). The counselors are rewarded in the special connections they form with both their co-workers and the children. With a counsellor’s friendship and guidance, a child is able to accomplish more than he or she ever dared to before and can strengthen his or her sense of self.

Summer camps vary in type and duration. The traditional summer camps may run for seven to nine weeks.
Camps are often located in scenic areas, near lakes or mountains. Some camps may specialize in boating activities on a beautiful lake while another might be perfect for hiking, rappelling down cliffs or performing arts. You can be assured that no matter what type of camp you go to or where the camp is located, there is going to be something immensely special about it, guaranteed!

It is exciting to see how camps in America have evolved into such a great tradition. The first documented summer camp began in 1861. It was organized by William Frederick Gunn, headmaster of the Gunnery School in Connecticut. We now have camps across the States, many with long histories and special traditions specific to their camp. Eight million children are finding a home away from home every summer to be free from school and the city. The growth continues only with the help of friendly counselors who come from across the seas to have a part in making summer camps an experience that enhances and blesses their lives and the lives of the children.

Many summer camps seek to provide an educational, physical, and social development for their campers. Camp is a place for children to try new experiences and maybe learn a skill that they want to carry on in the years to come. Children gain a sense of independence and achievement, it is often their first time away from home for an extended period of time, so camps are trusted to be a safe, nurturing, and holistic environment.

Counselors are fundamentally there to supervise the children. You and a small number of other counselors will be assigned to a group of campers with whom you will share a bunk or a cabin with. This will be your home for the duration of camp.

Support staff are the engine to the camp, they are to ensure a thriving camp environment. Hired counselors may be local or may come in from other countries in order to add cultural value and experience to the camp program, so if you are worried that you are the only international counselor, don’t worry you won’t be.

Overall, summer camps are growing, thriving, and evolving. Many camps are still traditional and will offer an outdoor environment with activities such as hiking, canoeing, and gathering around a camp fire. However, current times call for a broad range of camp activities. Just a few examples are the summer camps that specialize in the performing arts, radio broadcasting, magic, computers, mathematics, circus, and in some cases special needs. Summer camps are not limited in number, and they offer limitless special experiences.
