BECA LUCKETT

About Beca...

Hey, my name is Beca Luckett and I am 19 years old. I'm currently a first year in the University of Sheffield studying medicine. I have been placed in Camp Jaycee for this summer (2013) where I will be working with disabled children and adults.

I'm originally from Brighton and have lived there my whole life. I studied Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at A-level and did Maths at AS. I love acting, having acted professionally as a scare actor at a Halloween festival called Tulleys Shocktober fest. I can do stage make-up and have done directing and play writing through acting schools I attended when I was younger and at GCSE.
I really enjoy baking and do it often as a hobby and to teach friends. Something about kneading bread and baking cakes allows me to relax and is a nice break from work!

I volunteered at a disabled swimming school for four years; I started off looking after one particular girl with Autism, yet over time this grew to me teaching a class of four students. Three had Autism, including one with Asperger's syndrome, and the other had down's syndrome. I learnt so much about working with children with disabilities and how you can never stereotype them, or attempt to perceive how they'll act week on week. I loved working with my swimming class and miss them dearly at university!

I also love to travel and plan to do so after working at the camp this summer. Last year I spent two weeks in Northern Thailand, Sangkhla Buri, teaching children English. This was a brilliant experience where I learnt so much about the Thai culture and the differences seen at home. Sangkhla buri is the last town in Thailand before Burma, hence lots of the children were refugees whom, due to a lack of documentation, will have to stay in the town for the rest of their lives. This was a enlightening experience that allowed me to open my eyes to different cultures and is where I caught the travelling bug!

Sport is another thing I really enjoy; I played hockey for Burgess Hill Ladies Hockey 1st team during sixth form and played throughout secondary school. I also enjoy swimming and was a life guard at the local pool for 2 years, so I am adapt at first aid. Since starting University I have started play squash which I love; the fast paced game is a great way to unwind and have fun. I also enjoy rock climbing, water sports and anything with a thrill! I'm a real adrenaline junkie.

Sooo that's enough about me for now, I hope you enjoy reading this blog :)

Love Beca
