Most camp organisations require you to pay an initial payment of their service fees before or around the time of your in-person interview. This process helps the organisation ensure that candidates are serious about becoming a camp counsellor. It also helps you by spacing out the payments, thereby decreasing the fee amount to pay later on, so don’t worry when you are asked to pay a small fee of (usually) around £45 prior to your interview.
The interview will be done in one or two ways. It will either be done via one of the companies staff members, in-person in a cafe or coffee shop that is local to you, or with the power of magic (well, actually technology). Some may use Skype to have the interview with you.
Although your interview isn’t strictly formal (unless you are James Bond then come in a Tux), make sure you look presentable. Smart casual dress is fine. It is advisable to come prepared with a list of questions you may have for the camp organisation representative. The representative will have been to camp themselves so will have first hand experience.
It’s also a good idea to have specific examples and stories from your past experiences that are relevant to the role of a camp counsellor. Think about how you plan to make a difference at camp, whether it be by sharing your skills, or being an incredible role model to the campers. You may be asked about different scenarios that you could face while at camp, so think what would you do if you were in that position.
A couple of points to note if you are having a interview via Skype...Make sure you are in a well-lit area so that the people you are having a interview with can see you clearly. Your don't want to be one of those people on TV who hides their face or lowers their voice do you? It is also adviseable to make sure you are in a room that is quiet where nobody can distract you. Trust me on this one. I had my interview next to the living room and it was a bit embarrassing when you could hear the X-factor...especially when Rylan was on!
Remember, this is your opportunity to sell yourself to the company. So remember to sing 'Your Simply the best' in your head when you go to your interview. Be friendly, sustain eye contact, show your enthusiasm and SMILE.
You will find out with in a couple of days if you have been accepted by the company. If you have then CONGRATULATIONS! You have passed the next step to an amazing summer. I remember when I got accepted, I was jumping up and down around the house and my parents had to calm me down.
