LUKE BOTHAM

About Luke...

"Hey, I’m Luke Botham, I’m 19 and live in Darlington and Lincoln, where I’m at uni! Here I study journalism, and I aspire more than anything to become a radio journalist.

I chose to do a journalism degree because of how much I love radio, and I’m so glad I did! I’m currently a deputy day editor on our radio station, Siren FM, and get to help lead a team of amazing people every Thursday. We make a full news bulletin throughout the afternoon – producing the stories, doing interviews, and chatting to the public. Then at 5.45 we put it out live on air! I've read live quite a few times and there’s really nothing like the buzz and adrenalin you get from doing it. It’s so rewarding too, seeing people proud of something you've helped them to produce.

I write for a few publications too, and in the past I've been lucky enough to interview some amazing people. Some of these include Matt Cardle and Frank Turner, which I was really honoured and excited to be able to do! It was so fun! I love entertainment journalism, and this is something else I’d love to get into! I’m a massive fan of telly and music and am a bit of a geek when it comes to the latest soap gossip! I watch pretty much anything and everything and aren't too picky with music either – as long as I’m listening to it, I’m happy!

I've done some work experience in a holiday camp and got taught how to do things like fencing and archery, and then got to do these with the kids on their hols. Normally I’m not really the sportiest person, but I enjoyed this so much, and I loved helping people have a good time! It’s something I know I’d enjoy doing again, and this summer will of course the perfect chance. As well as this, I also helped to teach my little cousins to read as part of my English A-Level, and had to monitor the development of their speech. I'd babysat them before, but never had the chance to learn so much about them and they way they work until then. It was a really important and valuable learning curve for me and showed be I'd be more than happy to do anything similar again.

I also love fine art, and in my spare time I draw portraits. Normally these are of random famous people, but I have had a few people asking me to draw them! Since coming to uni I’ve had quite a positive response from people that have seen them, which is always quite a shock.  Art’s one of the few things I’ve actually always loved doing for as long as I can remember (Even used to draw pictures of Pokemon for my grandma when I was a little kid!) It’s the perfect way of winding down!

I’ll be blogging about the whole experience of summer camp, so hope you find it useful and enjoy it :) "
Luke.
